Pumping Insulin: Everything You Need for Success With an Insulin Pump
Published in Paperback by Torrey Pines Pr (June, 2000)
Authors: Ruth Roberts M.A., John T. Walsh P.A. C.D.E., and Barb Schreiner
Average review score:

Great learning tool and reference
On the advice of my PA, I read the book before going on the pump in October 2001 (22 years after my diagnosis with Type I diabetes). The book is written extremely well and provides clear and concise coverage of the almost every aspect of pump therapy. The authors highlight considerations to make before going on the pump, as well as circumstances you will encounter after beginning pump therapy. The book offers explanations and calculations to figure total daily dosages and advice on how to change dosages for exercise, patterns of high and low bg's, etc. The material included in the book is really valuable when you begin working with your doctor, PA, etc, to help you know what questions to ask. I felt like I had more confidence and knowledge in the transition to pump therapy. "Pumping Insulin" helped me to better manage the pump and my diabetes as soon as I walked into the doctor's office for my initial pump appointment. And for those that have already started pumping, the book's a great reference tool to have on hand.

Must-have reference for pumping.
We got this book in late March, 2001, shortly after our then-6 year old son who has Type 1 diabetes started pumping insulin. This reference explains so well how short-acting insulin is used in the body, how to calculate for it during exercise, how to make adjustments to the basal rates....it save our pump trainer many late night calls. It was a lifesaver in helping us get through the insulin pump learning curve faster. Only thing it doesn't handle in-depth enough is "surprise" infusion set changeouts & sensitivity to Humalog. This book helped us understand how to take better care of our son.

a book to change your future
This book is the best I have read on pumping, having taken us(my son aged 10 and I) from very little knowledge on the subject, to convincing us it was for him, and to using it as an essential handbook and support tool now he is on the pump. Umlike some other books, it is so easy to read and understand, without having to read and re read it to get the meaning. The tables in it are so useful and much of the information is not easy to find altogether in one place in any other books. As in car repair books, this one is a 'dirty finger' book - you use it as you go along, and can never know more than the book or outgrow it. I have bought several copies for other people now, and everyone has been pleased with it.A must if you have a pump or are thinking about getting one.

Remembering Jim Crow: African Americans Tell About Life in the Segregated South
Published in Hardcover by New Press (November, 2001)
Authors: William Henry Chafe, Raymond Gavins, Robert Korstad, Behind the Veil Project, Jennifer Lynn Ritterhouse, and Robert Gavins
Average review score:

Remembering Jim Crow
REMEMBERING JIM CROW is a colletion of first hand accounts of life in the Jim Crow south. The stories are compelling and at the same time sad.

The stories create the atmosphere that one is sitting in one of the elderly story tellers living room listening to them.

This book is especially worthwhile for non-African-Amercians readers, because virtually all African-Americans that have roots in the south, know these stories all too well.

A necessary book
This is an absolutely superb book, comprised of recollections of the Jim Crow years in the form of oral histories. It can be read through, or picked up at any part. There is an appropriate amount of historical introduction to each chapter.
This material needs to be read, and remembered. There was a long time in our history when, although there was no more slavery, African Americans were treated as a separate serf class, under constant pressures and reminders of their lower status. Whites used pervasive legal and social downward pressures to keep African Americans out of an equal education, and equal access to public facilities, much less the right to equal jobs and the right to vote -- and then claimed that African Americans' lack of achievement was a racial fault. If an African American violated one of the many social taboos, the sanctions ranged from a beating, to loss of job, and even being lynched.
While whites benefited from Jim Crow, the whites, also, were trapped in the system. They were also forced to abide by legal segregation, and were subject to social pressure if they were too liberal (being called "n* lover," "white n*," etc.).
What led to the mindset that the end of slavery should lead to continued legal and social oppression of African Americans? It was part of white American culture. Lincoln himself said that he was not "in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry.... [T]here must be the position of superior and inferior. I am as much as any other man in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race." In 1877, Rutherford B. Hayes traded the end of southern post-war Reconstruction for the electoral votes he needed to win the presidency. Southern states then were free to institute the Jim Crow system.
I believe we are more subject to peer pressure than we would like to believe. Although reviewer McInerney asserts that "no civilized person" would benefit from Jim Crow, I feel many otherwise-good people were trapped and/or blinded by their own interests and surroundings. When allowed, and even encouraged, their evil side showed itself. On this topic, see John Griffin's _Black Like Me_, on the different faces that whites showed to other whites, and to African Americans.
While we are certain that we wouldn't go back to that system, we shouldn't be so sure that we, also, wouldn't be trapped by it if we were born into it. Consider that Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy (to a large extent) didn't take effective action to end segregation.
This book is excellent. Those dreadful and shameful times -- and the vestiges which still continue -- must not be forgotten.

Reveals how blacks fought against the system
This slipcased book and 2-cd set supplements the written word with oral history, gathering the voices of men and women who were firsthand witnesses to segregation in the south. Stories by men and women from all walks of life reveal how blacks fought against the system, built communities, and ran businesses in a society which denied them basic rights. Remembering Jim Crow offers the reader a comprehensive, involving, highly recommended presentation.

The Return of Rafe Mackade (Silhouette Intimate Moments, No 631)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (April, 1995)
Author: Nora Roberts
Average review score:

An oldie, but a goodie
I am sure I came across this series from within a review I read. Thank you unknown reviewer! This is one of the best books (series) I have read. Rafe is a traditional male lead (bad boy), but the characters are fleshed out so well the old formula is still interesting. I read the series in order, but I am rereading out of order a month later and the books truly hold on their own. I really liked this book, but I can't say it is my favorite. They are all so good, I think of them as one continuous story. And wouldn't it be nice (and profitable) for them to be re-released together. I don't think in the last 6 years there have been that many better books. Once again...Why is this out of print? :)

love these boys
i, unlike most, didnt find all 4 books before starting, or even start with the first one (this one) but instead, read this one last. it didnt make the book any less, but it does make me want to re-read them in the proper order. i loved this book. rafe is almost perfect. regan is a wonderful woman and i loved the relationship between cassie and the rest of the family. i only wish there were more to this series! ::smile

The MacKade Brothers
I just love the MacKade Brothers they are simply delicious. They represent the men of my dreams. I just wish they really excisted. Such a shame they don't anymore. Well I just give these MacKade Brothers a 10 star rating but you don't have it.

Roadside Geology of Texas (Roadside Geology Series)
Published in Paperback by Mountain Press Publishing Company (April, 1986)
Author: Robert A. Sheldon
Average review score:

A Trusted Guide Always
As with all the books in this series, you simply cannot go wrong. On a recent trip to central Texas, we took this guide with us and were able to follow along the drive and both visually and scientifically understand what the geology was all about. A truly great geology guide for Texas.

Excellent
This book is very easy to read and understand - even by someone who knows nothing about geology! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the geological beauty of the beautiful state of Texas!

A must for roadcut rockhounds!
This is the best book of the Roadside Geology series. Spearing explains not just the location and character of the rock formations one encounters on TX roadways, but the processes which made them. Best of all, he specifically provides the name and formative time period of almost every formation mentioned (e.g., "Triassic Trujillo sandstone") -- avoiding the overgeneralized naming (e.g., "Mesozoic sediment layer") of a few other Roadside Geology volumes. This is certainly a time saver for the rock collector who catalogs his specimens! This book is a must-get for all rock enthusiasts -- even those who have never been to Texas. Now if someone would just write a Roadside Geology of Oklahoma volume...

Sacred Geometry: Philosophy and Practice
Published in Paperback by Thames & Hudson (April, 1989)
Author: Robert Lawlor
Average review score:

essential
This book is a brilliant and absolutely mindbending piece of writing. Want to know about the platonic solids, their connections to each other, how these things are used in Indian cosmology, what the number phi (1,618...) has to do with it, how these ancient ideas relate to cutting-edge physics today etc etc? You must be crazy to miss this one. BUY IT NOW!

Absolutely well crafted book on this subject!
I have been looking for a good book on this subject and this one does not disappoint one bit! The author goes through step by step from the simple concepts to the complex complete with many illustrations and even excercises so that you can experience the "magic" of geometry yourself. I could not imagine getting the same level of understanding from a book without all the diagrams to see the relationships. More of a workbook than a text book, but packed with information and history. I would rate this as an essential book for anyone's library who is interested in understanding religious symbols, architecture, mathematics, and the beauty of the creation we find ourselves in.

Fun!
This book is very enjoyable. It not only explains what sacred geometry is, it gives you exercises to do using basic tools like a compass, graph paper and a pencil. After reading and doing the fun and educational illustrations, you'll be looking for sacred geometry everywhere around you as well as spotting it in famous works of art and architecture.

Server-Side JavaScript(TM): Developing Integrated Web Applications
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (May, 1999)
Authors: Robert Husted, J. J. Kuslich, and J.J. Kuslich
Average review score:

Good book, dated topic
The book was very good with the best history of JavaScript (server and client-side) I have ever read. However, nobody in the professional world will start a project today in SSJS, the language is extinct. Only legacy web applications will be using this and there are so many better server-side languages available now.

SuperFile, SuperMail, SuperClient, Super SSJS
Have been using code from this book with great success, extending the functionality of SSJS objects (SuperFile, SuperMail)--until now (SuperClient). SuperClient can't seem to see the [client] object in an iPlanet WebServer 4.1 environment. So, digging around in vendor supplied documentation for that version, we find [customClient]. The description of this [customClient] object is very similar to [SuperClient]. Now, while merging the functionality of the two, the book continues to be a wonderful asset.

iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition Server-Side JavaScript Guide (v4.1)• March 2000 (p140 ff) Creating a Custom [client] Object

EXTRACT: Properties of the predefined [client] object can have only string values. To extend the [client] object with a custom object include the following line at the beginning of pages that require it: [var customClient = getCustomClient();] If this is NOT the first page that requests the object you get an existing object, otherwise a new one is created.

Excellent resource
I have been using and referring this book to development teams for the past year. An excellent tutorial and reference point for people exposing the power of Server-side JavaScript.

Professional Painted Finishes
Published in Hardcover by Whitney Library of Design (September, 1991)
Authors: Ina Brosseau Marx, Allen Marx, Robert Marx, and Robert Marz
Average review score:

Superb book - Knowledge of teaching & Painting -
Great book for all levels.
Ina and Allan Marx run a great faux finishing school that has spawned this great book. Complete
and through it a bible for novice to expert painters. Not only do they teach you the technique, but alos
how to "look and see" the item you are painting from nature. They are true professionals and
above all both are excellent teachers. I have taken their classes, and as there is no substituion for
taking one of their classes, this book is a great how to guide if you can't take one.
Excellent. Their knowledge of teaching and superb knowledge of faux painting marry in this books.

An essential for the serious artist.
I have a library full of books on painting techniques but this and the Finklestein book are the two that I consider "must haves." While most new books on decorative finishings repeat and repeat and repeat . . . the same pedestrian information on faux treatments, these give much more indept information on the techniques involved.

Very throurogh, great high quailty painted finishes
This is a wonderfully thorough book on creating the highest quality specialty painted finishes. It is advanced enough for the serious decorative painter while the instructions are detailed enough to allow the amateur or novice to try these techniques with outstanding results. The interior designer will also find it to be a valuable source book for fresh exciting design ideas.

Overall, the projects are more sophisticated and time-consuming than those in most books. A great deal attention is paid to tiniest details that make these finishes really stand out. The instructions are excellent, showing you how to create each finish step-by-step with a complete text description and demonstrative photos. Complete material and supply lists and recipes accompany each project.

The book starts out with the basics such as materials, safety, surface preparation and finishing coats. The glaze section is next with information on multi-layer glazing, novelty effects and techniques for glazing in small and large areas. There is great chart of problems and solutions and another on how tools affect glazing as well.

The simulation of marble and stone follows. Here the author talks about the formation and replication of stone before going on to the projects, which include fifteen marble and stone types such as malachite, granite, red levanto and French grand antique.

The section on graining is fantastic. It contains the most in-depth information on graining I have found anywhere. There is an analysis of patterns, a discussion of color, techniques for creating knots, troubleshooting section and color swatches of straight gained wood styles. There are over 20 wood types covered. Some include American oak, Brazilian rosewood, orientalwood, burl and birds-eye maple.

The final section of the book talks about setting up a professional practice. It contains financial planning, estimating, sample-making and much more. The appendix gives a great list of sources, lists English and metric equivalents and has a nice glossary of terms. If you want to create truly professional looking finishes, this is the book to get.

Robert Polidori: Havana
Published in Hardcover by Steidl (15 August, 2001)
Average review score:

Robert Polidori: Havana
Visceral images of a unique city, in which splendor and squalor are juxtaposed, and the past is suspended within the present, decaying yet enduring. Robert Polidori has captured the beauty and melancholy of Havana, gazing unflinchingly at the ruins and the people who inhabit them. When the boycott is finally lifted, all this will be swept away by a tide of new development, so try to see it now and use this wonderful book as an introduction and a lasting memento. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

spectacular photos
These photos are breathtakingly spectacular. As soon as I saw this book, I had to buy it. It was the first time I'd ever seen anything that captures exactly what being in Cuba feels like: as if you were witnessing the beautiful ruins of a decaying Roman empire. It's the most spectacular, cinematic misery you could ever experience. And I'm glad that someone like Robert Polidori has captured it so faithfully before it all crumbles to the ground (or gets built over with hideous concrete Spanish hotels).

Poignantly, achingly beautiful
In these urban landscapes of contemporary Havana, Polidori captures on film the spectacular ruin of a vibrant culture living on faded memories of past opulence. The overwhelming feeling I got from viewing these photographs was that these people deserve so much better than this. This work is visually stunning, but it goes beyond art. It holds up a slice of the Cuban soul for the world to see and weep for.

What a book,
Took me awhile to finally pick this book up to read but
when I did I could not put it down.Stephen King move over.
Waiting on the next book Robert.

STEP ASIDE MARY HIGGINS CLARK and F.....
As an avid reader of Mary Higgins Clark and Fern Michaels I put the book aside. I started to read the book then while shopping picked up another book by Mary Higgins Clark putting "Serial" to the side. I am ashamed, three days ago I picked Serial up again and couldn't put it down. As a book worm and Co-worker of Mr. Strange I would like to congratulate you, Excellent. The chapters well written and the viewing of each character at the same scene. I loved it and can't wait for the next book to be published......HURRY UP!!!!!

Move over Stephen King
This book takes a little time to get into it but once it grabs your attention you don't want to put it down until the end! I really enjoyed the way Mr. Strange keeps the reader on their toes by moving from one scene to another and back again. Look out Stephen King. Once the word is out this author is sure to have the number one best seller!

Skygods : The Fall of Pan Am
Published in Hardcover by Paladwr Press (01 October, 1999)
Authors: R.E.G. Davies and Robert Gandt
Average review score:

A well-documented account of the tragic fall of Pan Am.
Robert Gandt provides an insightful account of the fall from grace of Pan American, the 'Imperial Airline.'

The decline of Pan American Airways, from the mid-1960s to its demise in 1991, illustrates some of the best and worst elements of American capitalism, in particular, the inherent tensions between private corporations and regulatory authorities.

Sadly, no heroes emerge from Gandt's account of the internal machinations of what was once the World's Greatest Airline. Instead, the romantic spirit of Juan Trippe's adventure into global aviation was lost amidst a torrent of managerial egotism, greed and poor judgement.

Nor is any sentimentality wasted on the 'Skygods' who constituted the captains of Pan Am's skies. If Gandt is to be believed, a more egregious bunch of aviation demons would be hard to find.

While Gandt peppers the unfolding tragedy with personal insights gleaned from 27 years service with Pan Am, some "poetic licence" appears in evidence; the apparent embellishment of several historical episodes to seduce the reader doesn't wash.

In some instances, names have been changed to mask the guilty. Frequent personal references to one Rob Martinside suggest this to be Gandt's own pseudonym.

Nevertheless, 'Skygods' serves as a vivid testimony to the fickle nature of corporate adventurism. A recommended read.

A must read for airline pilots
I am a pilot for American airlines and think this is a must read for anyone in the airline industry. If you think your company couldn't fold, you need to read what happened to Pan Am.

Its also an entertaining read. I highly recommend this book.

Skygods: The Fall of Pan Am
My Mom flew for Pan Am during the glorious 60's/beginning 70's and she was based in Berlin. As from my childhood on I was fascinated from Airlines/Aircrafts. So one day I thought that it would be nice to read more about 'the' american Airline my Mom worked for - and to learn a little bit more from the time which has passed. So I went into a bookstore and ordered this book. What shall I say - it was very impressive to read so many facts about the airline. I also questioned my mom and she told me that many things were the way as they are written in the book. The book is very easy to read (even for people that can't speak/read english that well) and written in a very interesting way. What I missed in the book is a map with all the destinations Pan Am was flying to on a regular base. It would also be interesting to know what happened to all the employees that stayed with Pan Am till the last day and so on. I can really recommend the book.
